A Family Poem

Charlotte

One Autumn when the world was just an ordinary place

Your tiny hand reached up to me and lightly brushed my face.

My hidden heart within me stirred and bade me let it free-

Right then you claimed the largest share for all eternity.

The story of your first year was as overstocked with joy

As Santa Claus' Christmas store is filled with every toy.

Your throaty laugh, your dancing eyes, your wobbly steps so new-

These are some treasures of that year, to name but just a few.

You learned to ask, "Oh, where it went?" and "Look at this!" you said.

You learned to dance, and how to sing, and prayers for table and bed.

Without a doubt the days were filled with, oh, so much to do -

That even Gramma had to rush the year that you were two.

Accomplishments were many when you could say "I'm three!"

You now had learned to dress yourself and always brush your teeth.

You counted up to ten - sometimes; you chatted on the phone -

But to your Gramma this was best - you made her house a home.

Epilogue

No longer is this house a home. It's only just a place

That has the common rudiments of walls and floors and space.

So like this house, my life is like an ordinary one -

The magic in my days is spent - My Autumn Love is gone.
